South Bend, IN – Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach Niele Ivey continues to cement her legacy as one of the greatest figures in the sport. The university announced today that Ivey will be honored with a prestigious award recognizing her contributions to the program, and in a historic move, a statue of her will be erected outside Purcell Pavilion.
Ivey, a former Notre Dame standout as a player and longtime assistant coach, has led the Fighting Irish to continued success since taking over the program in 2020. Under her leadership, Notre Dame has remained a powerhouse in women’s college basketball, competing at the highest level and securing key victories in the ACC and NCAA Tournament.
University officials praised Ivey’s impact both on and off the court. “Niele embodies everything Notre Dame basketball stands for—excellence, leadership, and resilience,” said Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick. “Her influence goes beyond wins and championships; she has shaped the lives of so many student-athletes and has set a new standard for coaching.”
The statue, set to be unveiled before the start of the next season, will be the first dedicated to a women’s basketball coach in the program’s history. Ivey expressed gratitude for the honor, acknowledging the support of her players, staff, and mentors. “This is beyond my wildest dreams,” she said. “Notre Dame has always been home to me, and I am incredibly humbled to be recognized in this way.”
As Ivey continues to guide the Fighting Irish toward championship aspirations, this recognition further solidifies her status as one of the greatest coaches in women’s college basketball history.
