As of December 2024, Ed Lamb, the head football coach at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), has secured a two-year extension to his employment agreement, extending his tenure through the 2028 season. This decision by the UNC Board of Trustees reflects the university’s confidence in Lamb’s leadership and his commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field.
Lamb’s coaching career began at the University of Redlands, where he served as the defensive line coach in 1997 before becoming the defensive coordinator from 1998 to 2000. He then took on a graduate assistant role at BYU in 2001, followed by a stint as the defensive coordinator at the University of Idaho from 2002 to 2003. After serving as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at the University of San Diego from 2005 to 2007, Lamb was appointed as the head coach at Southern Utah University in 2008. During his tenure at Southern Utah, he led the team to a Great West Conference championship in 2010 and a Big Sky Conference championship in 2015. In 2016, Lamb returned to BYU as the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator, a position he held until 2022. In December 2022, he was named the head coach at UNC.
In his inaugural season at UNC, Lamb faced a challenging schedule, with six of their opponents qualifying for the FCS playoffs. Despite the hurdles, the team’s performance under his guidance demonstrated promise and resilience. UNC Director of Athletics Darren Dunn expressed his support for Lamb, stating, “We wanted to send a message to Coach Lamb, his staff, and his student-athletes that we believe in his process and appreciate how he is developing his players into young men, his involvement in our community and University.”
Lamb’s coaching philosophy emphasizes the holistic development of his players, focusing not only on athletic performance but also on academic achievement and personal growth. His approach has been instrumental in fostering a positive culture within the football program, earning him respect from both his players and the broader university community.
Looking ahead, Lamb aims to build on the foundation established in his first season, with a focus on recruiting talented student-athletes, enhancing the team’s competitive performance, and strengthening community engagement. The extension of his contract provides stability for the program and underscores the university’s commitment to supporting his vision for the future of UNC football.
In summary, Ed Lamb’s contract extension through the 2028 season reflects the University of Northern Colorado’s confidence in his leadership and dedication to the development of his players. With a focus on holistic growth and community involvement, Lamb is poised to continue making a positive impact on the UNC football program in the years to come.
