The 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship’s Round 3, held on January 25 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, delivered a series of unexpected developments that have significantly impacted the season’s trajectory.
450SX Class: Jett Lawrence’s Triumphant Victory
In the premier 450SX class, Team Honda HRC’s Jett Lawrence secured his first win of the season under challenging wet conditions. Lawrence demonstrated exceptional patience and precision, particularly in the treacherous whoop sections, which proved pivotal in his battle against Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson. Reflecting on his performance, Lawrence stated, “You have to be very patient [racing in those conditions]. Jason was riding really well, and I was struggling to find anywhere to gain on him or try to make a pass.”
Progressive Insurance ECSTAR Suzuki’s Ken Roczen delivered a commendable performance, finishing second and ascending to the top of the championship standings. Roczen expressed his elation, noting, “It’s an absolute dream… This was an absolutely insane race. We were in a battle the whole way, and it was awesome.”
Jason Anderson, who led for a significant portion of the race, ultimately secured third place. He acknowledged the intensity of the competition, stating, “I was able to get out front and the pace up there is really fast, and I had pressure the whole time.”
250SX Class: Haiden Deegan’s Dominance
The 250SX class witnessed a standout performance from Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan. After clinching the holeshot, Deegan maintained his lead throughout the race, even as heavy rain intensified the challenge. His victory was particularly significant given a prior incident with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Julien Beaumer during the heat race. Addressing the rivalry, Deegan remarked, “You pissed off the bull last week… keep talking and I’ll come out swinging.”
The podium was notably youthful, featuring three teenagers—a first since 2011. Cole Davies secured his inaugural professional podium in just his third Supercross race, benefiting from a last-lap error by Triumph Racing’s Jordon Smith. Davies shared his excitement, stating, “It’s a good feeling, my first podium… That was a sick race, so I’m stoked.”
Injury Updates: Jorge Prado’s Setback
In a surprising turn, Spanish rider Jorge Prado suffered a dislocated right shoulder during practice sessions at Anaheim 2. This injury has forced him to withdraw from both the third and fourth rounds of the season. Prado recounted the incident: “In the session qualifying, I overshot the quad and went into the berm. I tried to grab the net because I had nowhere else to go, and as soon as I grabbed it, I felt my shoulder pop out.” He aims to return for the fifth round in Tampa, Florida.
Looking Ahead
As the championship progresses, the standings have become increasingly competitive. Ken Roczen’s ascent to the top spot introduces a new dynamic, while Jett Lawrence’s recent victory positions him as a formidable contender. The upcoming rounds promise further excitement, with riders like Haiden Deegan and Cole Davies showcasing the rising talent in the sport.
The next round is scheduled for February 10, 2025, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Fans eagerly anticipate whether the current leaders will maintain their momentum or if new challengers will emerge to shake up the standings.
