An Open Letter from Eli Tomac
To my incredible fans, sponsors, teammates, and the entire motocross community,
Today, with a heavy heart and after much contemplation, I am announcing that I will be retiring from professional motocross racing at the end of this season. It is not an easy decision, but one I believe is right for my future, both as a person and as an athlete.
As I sit here reflecting on my career, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and awe. I began riding at a young age, driven by a love for the sport and the thrill of pushing myself to new limits. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to experience the highs of victory, the sting of defeat, and the unwavering support of an incredible community of fans, friends, and teammates. These moments have shaped me into the person I am today, and I carry each of them with me as I close this chapter of my life.
There are several reasons behind my decision to step away from competitive racing. First and foremost, my physical health has played a significant role in this choice. As most of you know, motocross is a demanding and grueling sport. It requires an immense amount of endurance, strength, and mental focus. While I have been incredibly fortunate to avoid any major injuries throughout my career, the toll on my body over the years is undeniable. The repetitive nature of this sport, combined with the inevitable wear and tear, has made it harder for me to perform at the level I know I am capable of. It is not just about the physical pain, but the mental fatigue that comes with constantly pushing my limits.
In addition to my health, I find myself at a point in my life where I’m eager to explore new opportunities and challenges. Motocross has been my entire world for over 15 years, but as I grow older, I realize there are other passions I want to pursue. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family, exploring new ventures outside of racing, and finding ways to stay connected with the sport I love in a different capacity.
The decision to retire is not one I have taken lightly. I want to be clear that this sport has given me everything I could have ever asked for. From my first championship to the countless unforgettable races, every moment has been worth it. The relationships I’ve built with my teammates, sponsors, and fellow riders have been invaluable, and I am proud of the legacy I leave behind.
I also want to express my deepest gratitude to all of you who have supported me over the years. To the fans who cheered for me through thick and thin, your unwavering dedication has meant more to me than words can express. To my team, thank you for your tireless work and belief in me. We’ve been through so much together, and I will forever be thankful for your support. And to my family, who has stood by me through every race, every injury, and every challenge — you are the foundation of everything I do, and I am eternally grateful for your love and encouragement.
I will forever cherish my time on the track and the memories we’ve made together. While my days as a competitor are coming to an end, I am excited about what the future holds. This is not a goodbye, but rather a new beginning. I will continue to support the sport I love, and I look forward to finding new ways to contribute and inspire future generations of riders.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being part of this incredible journey.
Sincerely,
Eli Tomac
