In October 1981, a fire erupted in the basement of Yankee Stadium, filling corridors with smoke and forcing over 100 reporters and personnel to evacuate. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined, and there were no reports of injuries.
More recently, in June 2023, wildfires burning in Canada caused smoke to waft south to New York, enveloping Yankee Stadium in an eerie haze. The air quality index reached 153, which is considered “unhealthy.” Despite the smoky conditions, the New York Yankees proceeded with their game against the Chicago White Sox.
