Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, two of tennis’s most celebrated figures, share a love story that began under unconventional circumstances. Agassi, who had long admired Graf from afar, first met her at the 1992 Wimbledon Champions’ Ball, where they danced together following their respective victories.
Their paths crossed again in 1999 during a joint practice session in Key Biscayne, arranged by their coaches. At the time, both were involved with others: Agassi was married to actress Brooke Shields, and Graf was dating German racing driver Michael Bartels. Unbeknownst to Graf, Agassi had separated from Shields and was interested in pursuing a relationship with her. He sent a bouquet of roses to her hotel room, accompanied by a heartfelt letter. However, Graf, concerned about potential misunderstandings due to her existing relationship, cautioned Agassi to maintain distance, stating, “I want no misunderstanding between us. Don’t come near me now. My boyfriend is here.”
As news of Agassi’s divorce became public, Graf gained clarity about his intentions. Their relationship developed over the following months, leading to their marriage in 2001. That same year, they welcomed their son, Jaden, followed by their daughter, Jaz, in 2003.
Reflecting on their relationship, Agassi remarked, “I knew it from the first moment. It was immediately magic between us—and it still is today.” Graf, acknowledging her more reserved nature, noted that while it took her longer to come to the same realization, she recognized something unique and special in their bond.
Today, Agassi and Graf are regarded as one of tennis’s most beloved couples, maintaining a low profile while focusing on their family life.
