OFFICIAL;’ Michigan football makes a huge addition…..
The Michigan Insider has learned that Brian Jean-Mary has been formally hired by Michigan football. He is anticipated to take over as linebackers coach and run defense coordinator for Michigan.
TMI first broke the story of Sherrone Moore’s arrival with Jean-Mary in mid-February. After a protracted HR process, his hiring is now complete as of Tuesday afternoon. Jean-Mary comes to Ann Arbor from Tennessee, joining defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and defensive line coach Greg Scruggs as coaches hired by the University this week.
Jean-Mary (pronounced ZHAHN-muh-REE) previously coached defense at Louisville (2010-13), Texas (2014-16), USF (2017-19), Michigan (2020), and Tennessee (2021-23).
Three years ago, Jean-Mary was one of the coaches Jim Harbaugh planned to keep as part of his restructured staff after the 2020 season, but a chain of events led to Harbaugh reshuffling to appoint Matt Weiss as his new quarterbacks coach, and Jean-Mary moving to Tennessee. Despite his brief stint in Ann Arbor, he garnered a high level of respect from his colleagues, including Moore.
Throughout his 24-year coaching career, Jean-Mary has built a reputation as a developer and motivator. At Tennessee, he was credited with helping the program improve defensively. According to his bio, “Jean-Mary’s first season at Rocky Top in 2021 saw the Volunteers establish an attacking defensive identity despite a lack of depth and multiple injuries at linebacker.” Tennessee concluded the season tied for eighth in the nation and second in the SEC in tackles for loss with 108, nearly tripling its total from the year before his arrival.”
